THE LIFE AQUATIC – Underwater worlds in glass

For more than a century, René Lalique’s Paris-based glassware house has been producing jewellery and other products inspired by nature. Its latest crystal sculptures and vases, created by glass masters in the north of France, are adorned by powerful sea creatures. Southeast Asian fighting fish are entangled in battle. The Koi, Chinese symbol of success and longevity, winds around a vase. Elsewhere Lalique takes a more abstract approach to the maritime theme. A crystal vessel is covered with glass spheres reminiscent of air bubbles rising in water. The smallest piece in the collection is about ten centimetres high, the largest vase almost 30cm.
